In 2010, award winning Today show correspondent and author Jill Rappaport traveled to Royer Greaves School for the Blind to film a segment for the Today show featuring Bill Smith’s unique pet therapy program. The program Pit Bulls for the Blind soon came to the attention of Broadway Barks who visited Royer Greaves and watched these remarkably gentle (and often misunderstood) dogs at work. Their visit inspired Braille Barks, and Bernadette Peters’ popular children’s books, Stella is a Star! and Broadway Barks, became the first selections to be converted to braille and distributed to schools throughout the United States.
Helen Keller understood the innumerable benefits of sharing your life with canine companions. She was also an out-spoken proponent of education and therapy involving animals. Helen Keller loved many dogs throughout her eighty-seven years, including Boston Terriers, numerous Pit Bulls, a variety of mixed breed dogs, and a much-loved Akita (pictured above).
